About Us

Hello!

I’m Justin, artist, silversmith, and owner of Beneath the Mountains.

I create silver jewelry inspired by the ancient magical traditions of Northern Europe. The silver jewelry you’ll find here on this site is a combination of individually handwrought items and laser etched silver jewelry created from my own original artwork.

First formed in 1996, Beneath the Mountains has focused on creating silver jewelry that helps people express their own magical beauty to the world. As a result of the meandering, river-like nature of life, I put aside my art and the original business in 1998 to pursue other interests. In my heart I always knew I would be pulled back into the worlds of wonder, curiosity, and magic held together by love and intention. Thus, toward the end of 2017, I found myself thrown over a proverbial waterfall in the river that is my life and decided to return to creating magical, wearable art in the form of silver jewelry.

My creations primarily revolve around “Celtic-style” knots that I draw by hand, recreated as digital vector art and then hand-sawn out of sterling silver sheet metal. In addition to my “knot work” I also create castings created by melting and pressing molten sterling silver into charcoal molds. Most of the castings are created from Icelandic Galr Stavs found on record in Iceland. I also create jewelry from translations of Latin alphabet to the Norse Elder Futhark, or Runic alphabet, like the made-to-order name pendants. I have always enjoyed creating jewelry that let’s you know you are wearing it. As a result my jewelry tends to be heftier than much of the mass-produced silver jewelry you’ll find out and about in the world.

Much of the jewelry I sell is produced by hand in my studio located in Hinesburg, Vermont. In order to offer some more affordable alternatives, some of the jewelry I sell is machine made, like the laser etched sterling silver cuffs and medallions. I strive to find fabricating companies located in Vermont, New England and the United States. It is really important to me that Beneath the Mountains supports a great standard of living for all the people who help create the beautiful jewelry you buy here.
